New Girls’ School in Kibos Named After Ida Odinga.
A newly established secondary school in Kibos, Kisumu County, has officially been named Ida Odinga Girls Secondary School, in honour of Dr. Ida Odinga, the wife of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The naming was proposed by Kisumu East Member of Parliament Shakeel Shabbir Ahmed following the completion of the school’s construction, which was funded through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
Previously known as Kibos Mixed Secondary School, the institution is now being transformed into a girls’ school. The modern school complex includes 16 classrooms and will host students who were formerly learning at the mixed school. The area MP had earlier donated a school bus in preparation for the official launch.
During the grand opening, Dr. Ida Odinga received the honour with appreciation, describing the institution as a symbol of hope, empowerment, and opportunity for girls throughout the region. She pledged her commitment to supporting the school’s academic and physical growth, emphasizing her desire to see it thrive.
Dr. Odinga expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and told the audience that having a school named after her was one of the most meaningful gifts she could receive. She also remarked, “Honourable Shakeel, thank you so much. Now that you have named it after me, make sure I come here quite often so that it reflects me.”
To demonstrate her support, Dr. Odinga committed to sponsoring four girls who share her name, assuring them of full educational support. She emphasized that they must work hard and succeed.
Additionally, she directed the school administration to compile a list of pressing needs, promising to respond accordingly. She told those present that if essentials such as mattresses or blankets were lacking, she would personally provide them.
She stated her intention to make regular visits to the school and expressed her vision of transforming it into a centre of excellence. Ida Odinga instructed, “Identify the things you need in order of priority and put them down. I would like this school to be a centre of excellence.”

In a concluding address, Dr. Odinga urged the girls to embrace science and mathematics, challenging the outdated belief that such subjects are difficult for female students. She encouraged them to pursue these fields as a path to greater opportunities. She also advised the students to steer clear of alcohol abuse, warning that it had derailed many bright futures in the country.
