Night Fire Destroys Dormitory at Dr Aggrey High School in Taita Taveta.
Property belonging to hundreds of students was destroyed on Thursday night when a fire engulfed a dormitory at Dr Aggrey High School in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County. The incident left students grappling with significant losses as their belongings were consumed by the flames.
Reports indicate that the fire began around 7 pm, coinciding with the time students were leaving the dormitory for their evening lessons after supper. Despite attempts by the students and nearby residents to douse the flames, the recently constructed dormitory was completely destroyed.
Videos and photos shared online captured the extent of the devastation, showing the building enveloped in thick smoke while students stood helplessly at a distance, witnessing their possessions turn to ashes.
Shortly after the fire broke out, a team of firefighters from the Taita Taveta County Government arrived and managed to extinguish the blaze. Authorities confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported, providing some relief amid the devastation.
Preliminary findings suggested that the fire might have been sparked by an electrical fault, potentially linked to the ongoing heavy rains being experienced in various parts of the country. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the exact cause of the incident.
School Administration and Parents Address the Situation
The school administration urged students to remain patient as plans to secure alternative accommodation for the affected students were being implemented. Parents and other school leaders were promptly informed about the incident, ensuring transparency and coordinated support for the affected community.
This incident comes on the heels of a similar fire two weeks ago at Moi Girls High School in Kibera, Nairobi. In that case, a dormitory housing 50 students was destroyed on the evening of January 20.
The Kenya Red Cross Society reported that the fire broke out while students were attending evening classes. Firefighters from the Nairobi City County Government successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings.
