Noah Midamba Appointed New Moi University Council Chairperson

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has appointed Noah Midamba as the new Chairperson of Moi University Council.

This announcement was made in a gazette notice dated Friday, January 17, which also named Ronald Wasike, Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Edward Sambili, and Anne Weceke Makori as new council members. The appointments are effective immediately, with the members set to serve for three years.

Noah Midamba brings a wealth of experience, having served as the Vice Chancellor of KCA University for a decade before stepping down in 2021.

The new appointments come with the revocation of the tenure of former council members. Those affected include Humphrey Kimani Njuguna, Clara Momanyi, Christopher Khaemba, Eusilah Ngeny, and Susan Aletia.

The Education CS noted that these changes were made under the powers conferred by section 36 of the Universities Act and section 51 of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.

Lecturers’ Protests Over Unpaid Salaries

The announcement of the new council follows a turbulent period at Moi University, marked by protests from lecturers over delayed salary payments.

On January 10, the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) instructed lecturers to stay away from workstations due to the institution’s failure to honor a return-to-work formula signed in 2023.

UASU Secretary General Nyabuti Ojuki highlighted that Moi University had not paid its staff salaries for over two months, despite other universities implementing the national Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and receiving funds from the national treasury.

The union expressed frustration, describing Moi University as an outlier among Kenyan universities for failing to prioritize staff and student welfare.

After a week of unrest, Moi University took corrective action on January 16 by releasing Ksh113 million to pay workers their November and December salaries. This development eased tensions, though the university continues to face scrutiny over its financial and administrative operations.

The newly appointed council will likely prioritize stabilizing the institution and addressing the issues raised by lecturers and other stakeholders.
