North-Eastern TTCs Enrolment Rises as Govt Lowers Entry Requirements to C (Plain).
Efforts by the government and local leaders to implement educational solutions in the north-eastern region are showing progress, as student enrolment in Teachers’ Training Colleges (TTCs) continues to rise.
For years, the region has faced a persistent teacher shortage, especially in schools within Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera counties, due to insecurity and terror-related concerns leading to mass withdrawals of teachers.
Governors and members of parliament have been actively promoting a shift in attitudes, urging local youth to pursue teaching careers.
To further encourage enrolment, various leaders have introduced full sponsorship programs for students joining TTCs, ensuring financial constraints do not hinder their participation.
Additionally, the Ministry of Education revised the entry requirements for TTCs, lowering the minimum qualification from a mean grade of C (plain) with subject-specific requirements to just a C (plain).
This adjustment has significantly increased enrolment, alleviating previous under-enrolment concerns in these institutions.
Government Expands Teachers’ Training Colleges
During a county education dialogue in Garissa on the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Elias Abdi, the Director General at the State Department for Basic Education, stated that the government had established more Teachers’ Training Colleges in the region.
He emphasized that local attitudes toward teaching as a career had improved and that communities were now actively supporting young people in joining the profession.
Abdi highlighted the positive impact of these efforts, noting that teacher enrolment in Garissa County had grown from just 50 to approximately 1,200 in the past two years, with the majority being from the local community.
He further stated that Wajir now has nearly 200 first-year students in TTCs, while Mandera’s enrolment has reached almost 2,000 students.
“In the last two years, teacher enrolment in Garissa County has improved from just 50 to about 1,200 and these teachers are mainly from the region. In Wajir, we have close to 200 first-years now in the TTCs, while in Mandera; the enrollment is almost 2000 students,” Abdi said.
He concluded by expressing optimism that once these students graduate, the region would have a strong supply of local teachers who would actively contribute to the education sector.

Unlike in the past, where schools heavily relied on teachers from other parts of the country, local communities would now take the lead in staffing their institutions.
“When all these teachers graduate, we will have a good supply of local labour from the local communities who will be actively participating unlike in the past when we used to rely on teachers from other parts of the country,” he added.
