The North Rift has the highest proportion of teenagers who have never attended school. The Ministry of Health’s most recent Kenya Adolescent Health Survey reveals that 59% of respondents have never attended school. This makes North Rift the lowest region in terms of School Enrolment and Attendance

Between December 2019 and January 2020, the investigation was conducted in 380 schools across 44 counties in Kenya.

Among the data collection tools were electronic surveys delivered via Survey CTO software.

The survey shows that this region has the lowest enrollment rate—35%—when compared to the national enrollment rate, which is 87%. North Eastern comes in second with a enrollment rate of 59%.

The majority of respondents with a primary school education (77%) were able to read a complete sentence, with the exception of North Eastern (27%) and Rift Valley North (51%).

Across the nation, the majority of participants experienced school absences ranging from one to five days, except in the North Eastern region, where most individuals were absent for over five days. Furthermore, in rural areas, School Enrolment and Attendance rates were at their highest.

Among those who had missed school, 67 percent and 17 percent, respectively, cited illness and a lack of funds as the primary reasons.

In the region of the North Rift, however, the majority of respondents indicated that the schools were far apart.

Other reasons for missing school included having a child or being pregnant, which were frequently cited in Nairobi and Western, while 5% of respondents in Western cited having to work as the cause for missing school.

The report calls for the implementation and enforcement of existing policies and laws safeguarding children’s rights to education, particularly against child labor, as well as support for the return to school policy, particularly for teenage girls who are pregnant.

In addition, the report requests that stakeholders develop appropriate curricula and monitoring materials for each level of literacy instruction in primary schools.
