NTSA Begins School Bus Inspection as Government Effects New Changes
The government has banned unauthorized Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) from operating on Kenyan roadways with immediate effect.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a harsh warning that unlawful PSVs, such as Noah, Probox, and Voxies, will be impounded and their owners and operators punished under traffic regulations.
Murkomen has also mandated that all school buses be inspected by May 1, 2024, in an effort to reduce the country’s increasing number of road accidents.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will conduct the exercise.
Moving forward, no short-term licenses will be provided to PSVs. Similarly, the Authority must immediately suspend the granting of new PSV operator routes pending verification.
The new regulations are motivated by what the CS describes as an increase in incidents this year compared to last year during the same period (January to April).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 9, the CS mandated that the speed limiters be integrated with the NTSA Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS) for effective monitoring of driving speeds.

According to the CS, the vehicles would communicate information about their speeds to assist police and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in enforcing traffic rules.
