Nyagakairu Primary School with 3 Pupils and 7 Teachers Faces Closure.
Nyagakairu Primary School, located in Mugwe Ward of Chuka Igambang’ombe constituency, Tharaka Nithi County, is teetering on the edge of closure due to an alarming decline in student enrollment.
At the start of the 2025 academic calendar’s first term, only three pupils returned to the school, signaling a worsening crisis that has persisted for years.
The institution, which once accommodated 71 learners in 2021, has faced a steady decline in student numbers. The highest enrollment in recent years has not exceeded 40 pupils, leaving most classrooms deserted.
Learning activities ceased in October 2024, with the current term opening to empty spaces and an air of uncertainty.
Teachers Arrive to Empty Classrooms
The school’s seven teachers report to work daily, hopeful that students might return. However, they leave without engaging in teaching activities, their classrooms untouched, and chalkboards clean.
This recurring scene underscores the dire situation, as the school compound remains eerily silent, reflecting the lack of learners.
The dwindling enrollment has sparked questions about the causes of the learner shortage. Authorities and stakeholders are urging parents to bring their children back to school to avoid permanent closure.
They emphasized the risk of losing the institution entirely if the situation remains unresolved.
A Steady Decline in Enrollment
In 2021, Nyagakairu Primary School had a modest but stable enrollment of 71 pupils. The years since then have seen a drastic reduction, with numbers falling sharply and culminating in the current state of crisis.
