Nyamira Police Investigates Headteacher’s Suicide and Depression.

In recent months, several teachers have reportedly taken their own lives, with depression being a suspected factor.

Police in Manga Sub-county, Kitutu Masaba Constituency, Nyamira, are currently investigating the death of Barnabas Nyakundi, the head teacher of Mokwerero Primary School. Nyakundi is believed to have died by suicide on Friday of last week.

Evidence of Depression

A note allegedly written by Nyakundi indicated signs of deep despair. He expressed that he was exhausted and unable to continue fighting, implying that death would provide him with the peace he sought.

“I am tired. I can’t fight anymore. Death will give me rest. I couldn’t make it,” read part of the note .

His note suggested that he had reached his breaking point, saying that he couldn’t endure any longer.

The Manga Sub-county Police Commander, Benson Makumi, confirmed that Nyakundi’s body was discovered hanging inside his house. He further mentioned that investigations into the incident had begun, and the body had been transferred to the mortuary for further procedures.

Final Farewells and Gratitude

Nyakundi reportedly bid his neighbors farewell, informing them of his struggles without offering specific details.

He told them that if he disappeared, it meant he had reached his limit. In his last moments, Nyakundi thanked a woman, identified only as Mama Peter, for providing him with food during his final days.

Previous Teacher Suicides

Nyakundi’s death is not an isolated incident. Over three months ago, another teacher from Nyamira ended his life after reportedly losing Ksh50,000 in an online casino bet.

This teacher, a member of the Nyamira Boys High School Board of Management, also hanged himself in his rented room.
