Nyamira Teacher Faces Attempted Murder Charges After Caning Pupil 107 Times
Jackson Mobisa Marucha, a teacher at Riang’ombe SDA Primary School, gained notoriety in March 2023 for caning a Grade Four pupil 107 times on the buttocks.
The severe punishment followed the student’s report that his school uniforms had been stolen from a clothesline.
Initially, investigating officers suggested that Marucha be charged with assault.
However, after further review, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) decided to press attempted murder charges.
The case will be mentioned on July 29 at the Keroka Law Courts in Nyamira County.
Details of the Incident
Marucha allegedly tried to hide the severity of his actions by locking the boy in a dormitory and denying him medical attention.
The boy’s injuries were so severe that a chunk of flesh was missing from his buttocks, leaving him unable to sit.

The incident was brought to light by the boy’s classmates, who informed his visiting uncle. The school administration initially barred the uncle from seeing the boy.
The story went viral on social media, leading Kenyans on Twitter to call for Marucha’s immediate arrest.
Investigation and Arrests
A multi-agency team, including DCI detectives, local police, and Ministry of Education officials, intervened.
They questioned the school’s head teacher, Isabella Kumenda, and four of her subordinates.
Although Kumenda claimed she was away during the incident, she was questioned about the delay in reporting the matter.
