Over 200 Nyamira ECDE Teachers Seek Reinstatement After Contract Termination
Over 200 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers from Nyamira County are urging Governor Amos Nyaribo to reinstate their contracts, which were terminated.
The affected teachers claim they were among the first to be employed during Phase One and Two recruitment in 2016 and 2017.

Age Limit Exclusion
The teachers stated that in 2022, the county government employed 400 ECDE teachers and confirmed them under permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms.
However, they were excluded due to their age, as the civil service in Kenya sets 45 years as the maximum age limit for employment.
They argued that their prolonged joblessness after completing college should have been a consideration for their permanent employment instead of being replaced by younger recruits.
Personal Accounts Highlight Struggles
Several teachers shared their struggles. Alice Mokeira expressed disappointment over being denied the rare opportunity to serve the public and earn a living despite years of professional training.
The teachers, many carrying their certificates, urged Governor Nyaribo to reconsider his decision, appealing for reinstatement to support their families.

They also stated their willingness to work under contract terms if permanent positions were not feasible.
Jeremiah Onsare recounted being unfairly viewed as a failure and a beggar, emphasizing that their dismissal has tarnished their reputations.
Mary Rachael, a single mother, narrated how she has been washing clothes for neighbors to pay her daughter’s school fees and meet basic needs.
Zachariah Nyariki, 46, shared his experience of working for a local lumberjack, earning only lunch and KSh50 daily, despite his passion for teaching.
Appeal for Legislative Support
The teachers called on Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to collaborate with the new Assembly Speaker, Thaddeus Nyabaro, to advocate for their reinstatement.
They appealed for collective action to ensure their grievances reach the governor and receive the attention they deserve.
In a separate event, Governor Amos Nyaribo hosted residents at his Magwagwa rural home on Monday.
During the gathering, he distributed food and blankets to wish the community good fortune as they welcomed the new year. He expressed his hope for a year of unity and prosperity for Nyamira residents.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving basic education, emphasizing its foundational role in the education system.
He highlighted achievements in the ECDE sector, particularly the construction of 98 modern classrooms across all 20 wards in Nyamira County.
