Oyuu Assures KNUT Teachers of a Better CBA for 2025-2029.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has reassured its members of a more favorable 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) as it prepares to initiate negotiations with the government.
Secretary General Collins Oyuu emphasized that they are focused on securing a CBA that prioritizes the needs of teachers, particularly regarding financial benefits.
Oyuu revealed that the union has enlisted technocrats to draft the new CBA, ensuring that it addresses the most pressing concerns of teachers.
He underscored that KNUT’s primary focus remains on improving teachers’ welfare, and the union has never abandoned its stance despite the decision not to strike.
Oyuu clarified that although KNUT had issued a strike notice, it was withdrawn, but the union remains committed to advocating for teachers’ rights.
He reaffirmed that the union’s core mission is to resolve issues affecting teachers, hence the push for a new and better CBA.
Key Focus: Career Progression
One of the major concerns KNUT aims to tackle in the upcoming CBA negotiations is the issue of career progression guidelines.
Oyuu pointed out that many teachers have been stuck in the same job group for years, which he described as a violation of their rights. He stated that addressing career stagnation is crucial for the union as it moves forward with the CBA.
Oyuu reiterated the importance of tackling the career progression guidelines to ensure that teachers can advance in their careers. He emphasized the need for the union to take a firm stance on this matter.
Monitoring of the 2021/2024 CBA Implementation
After meeting with the Nyanza Regional KNUT Council, Oyuu stated that the union is closely monitoring the implementation of the current 2021/2024 CBA.
He assured members that the union is still actively involved in the process to ensure teachers’ interests are safeguarded.
Oyuu dismissed claims that the union had been compromised to avoid striking, stating that a strike is always a last resort for the union.
He explained that a strike is the final tool they use, which is why they refrained from going to the streets.
Planning for the Future
Looking ahead, Oyuu said that KNUT delegates will convene towards the end of the year to strategize and address unresolved issues affecting members.
He indicated that the union plans to tackle these matters systematically, ensuring that each concern is addressed thoroughly.
