Parents Call for Ministry’s Safety Crackdown in High Schools After Primary Boarding Closure
Parents in Kisii County have applauded the Ministry of Education for its decisive action in shutting down boarding schools deemed unfit for learners.
They urged the government to expand this initiative to boarding secondary schools, citing even worse hygienic conditions in some of their facilities, which pose significant health risks to students.
They expressed their satisfaction with the crackdown, emphasizing that many private school owners exploit these facilities to extract extra money from parents.
One parent, Anne Biyaki, stated that the closure was a positive step toward addressing the misuse of such institutions.
Nationwide Closures Announced
The Ministry of Education, through a circular, announced the closure of 348 boarding sections in primary schools across the country.

The decision followed an assessment conducted in September and October. Kisii County recorded 17 affected institutions, including prominent schools such as:
- River Bank Academy
- St. Anne Metaburo in Etago Sub-county
- Tabaka Girls
- St. Angela’s Precious Hope School
- Mwata School for the Deaf
- St. Reuben Young
- St. Peters Kisii
Implementation of Closure Orders
The Ministry, through a letter signed by Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang’, directed all County Directors of Education to enforce the closure orders immediately.
The letter mandated them to ensure that unapproved boarding sections ceased operations as per the attached list of schools.

Regional Directors of Education and their assistants were instructed to inform parents early enough to allow them to transfer their children to alternative schools.
The Ministry reiterated that the goal of these actions is to safeguard students’ welfare and ensure compliance with educational standards.
