Parents, Teachers Unions Applaud President Ruto’s Decision to Postpone School Resumption
Parents and teachers have applauded President Ruro’s move to postpone school reopening.
The National Parents Association’s head, Silas Obuhatsa, expressed relief for parents, teachers, and learners in impacted areas.
This would allow the government to do proper impact assessments across all schools and plan ahead of time for what approach will be used when the new reopening date is announced.
Obuhatsa emphasized that this opportunity would afford affected families ample time to prepare for the reopening of schools.

Additionally, he urged parents to remain vigilant against the ongoing floods and emphasized their responsibility to ensure their children’s safety until the announcement of the new reopening date.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) praised the president’s directive.
Collins Oyuu, Knut secretary general, described it as a wise and appropriate decision, citing feedback from their National Executive Committee meeting, which highlighted concerns about the safety of learners in schools.
Akello Misori, Kuppet secretary general, remarked that the president is best placed to make such a decision because he has more information regarding the effects of the rain.
He further added that this gives the government more time to engage stakeholders on schools reopening as it happened during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Johnstone Nzioka, Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (Kepsha) chairman, hailed the president’s decision, stating that the president must be informed by intelligence on the ground.
He expressed appreciation for the decision, considering it the right one. Nzioka acknowledged the academic losses pupils might incur but emphasized the importance of prioritizing their safety. He mentioned plans for a recovery strategy upon resumption.
