Parents Urge Drivers to Prioritize Road Safety as Students Head Back to School.

As students return to school after the long holidays, parents are urging drivers to exercise caution and follow road safety regulations.

This call for sober driving comes amid a shortage of vehicles to transport students, with some having to wait for hours to board a bus or matatu to reach their destinations.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has urged road users to report unroadworthy vehicles, while also conducting compliance checks to ensure the safety of all road users.

At the main bus park in Kisii town, activity was in full swing as parents sought transportation for their children traveling to various schools for the first term.

Parents expressed concern about their children’s safety, noting that some drivers appeared to be overloading their vehicles in an effort to capitalize on the high demand during the peak season.

Despite these concerns, vehicle owners in the town have implemented measures to ensure that only compliant vehicles and certified drivers are operating from the main bus park. This is part of the broader effort to safeguard passenger well-being during the busy period.

NTSA Cracks Down on Traffic Rule Violations

In addition to local measures, the NTSA has launched a nationwide multi-agency crackdown targeting blatant traffic violations. The authority issued a statement highlighting the importance of adhering to speed limits, particularly for vehicles ferrying students.

It emphasized that all such vehicles must have valid insurance and functional speed limiters in place to ensure safety.

Furthermore, the NTSA has advised road users to verify the details of the vehicles they travel in by using the mobile application provided by the National Transport and Safety Authority.

This initiative aims to encourage greater accountability and awareness among passengers, as well as improve overall road safety.

With the new school term underway, both parents and authorities are stressing the importance of road safety.

The NTSA’s ongoing efforts to monitor and enforce compliance with traffic regulations are designed to protect all road users, particularly students, during this busy travel period.
