President Ruto Awarded Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in Leadership at Baraton University
President William Ruto presided over the 42nd graduation ceremony at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton.
The ceremony, held on the university’s grounds in Chesumei Constituency, saw 1,267 graduates receive various degrees.
As part of the event, the university conferred upon President Ruto an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in Leadership.
“I congratulate Baraton university for being the first to offer a degree in nursing. This has been a premier institution for the development of our human capital,” Ruto said.
He noted that the university has produced some of the country’s most esteemed healthcare professionals.
Ruto expressed his admiration for Baraton’s role in advancing human capital development in Kenya.
Government Support and Funding
President Ruto announced a significant financial pledge during the ceremony. He committed a Ksh60 million grant from the government to the university, aimed at enhancing its infrastructure.
He stated that this funding would specifically aid in the completion of ongoing facility developments at the institution. The president instructed the Ministry of Education to ensure the grant’s allocation for these purposes.

Addressing the new graduates, President Ruto urged them to utilize the knowledge and skills they have acquired to contribute positively to the nation’s progress. He emphasized the importance of their role in the country’s development and prosperity.
The ceremony also marked a leadership transition at the university. Prof. Jackson Msafiri Mamba was installed as the new Vice Chancellor, succeeding Prof. Philip Maiyo, who had served in the position for ten years.
President Ruto welcomed Prof. Mamba, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the institution effectively and elevate its status further.
The president assured the university community, the church, and the government of his belief in Mamba’s capability to fulfill their expectations.
Call for Institutional Self-sufficiency
Education Cabinet Secretary Migosi Ogamba, who accompanied the president, addressed the need for universities to evolve towards self-sustainability.
He emphasized that institutions should seek ways to generate their own resources, reducing reliance on government funding.
