President Ruto Orders Machogu to Extend School Re-Opening Date Until Further Notice
The recent heavy rainfall has caused flooding, prompting President William Ruto to request the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of all schools nationwide.
President Ruto told the nation on Friday that the situation is likely to worsen in the coming days and postponed the school’s reopening date “until further notice.”
Heavy rainfall delayed the original April 29, 2024, reopening date to May 6, 2024. Ruto reported that flooding had caused havoc in every corner of the country.
Ruto stated that transportation challenges arising from flooded and damaged infrastructure across many parts of the nation necessitated the adjustment of the scheduled reopening of schools after the April holidays, set for Monday of that week.
Ruto also emphasized the danger that raging rivers and overflowing dams pose in downstream regions.
On Friday, Ruto directed the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of all schools nationwide for the second term until further notice.
The Head of State stated that the floods had killed 210 people, injured many others, and destroyed property worth an undetermined amount.

Ruto expressed regret that they had not yet reached the end of the dangerous period, anticipating further escalation. According to meteorological reports, the rains would persist, increasing both in duration and intensity for the rest of the month and possibly beyond.
At the same time, President Ruto urged that Members of Parliament reorganize their CDF allocations to prioritize the restoration of school infrastructure devastated by the floods.
