Primary School Heads Express Frustration Over Exclusion by TSC and Ministry.

Primary school leaders across Kenya have raised concerns about their exclusion from critical decision-making by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

These school heads argue that as essential implementers of education policies, their insights are crucial to shaping effective solutions in the sector.

According to Johnson Nzioka, National Chairman of the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA), school heads’ involvement in policy discussions is essential to genuinely improving educational standards.

Nzioka noted that head teachers have a unique perspective on school challenges, as they work directly with teachers, students, and parents.

During World Teachers Day celebrations in Nakuru, a KEPSHA National Executive Board (NEB) member, Abraham Siaya, delivered Nzioka’s message.

Nzioka stressed that as custodians of schools, head teachers possess firsthand knowledge of the obstacles affecting institutions, which other officials may overlook.

Infrastructure Deficiencies as a Primary Challenge

Nzioka pointed to inadequate infrastructure as a pressing issue for schools. This shortage includes the lack of laboratories in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and limited classroom space across various regions.

In particular, he cited that schools in Arid and Semi-Arid areas suffer from inadequate facilities, putting students in these regions at a disadvantage compared to their peers.

“Majority of our JSS schools lacks laboratories and some of our schools especially in Arid and Semi-Arid areas lack adequate classrooms which leaves learners disadvantaged compared to their peers elsewhere in the country,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of supporting teachers, Nzioka emphasized that they play a pivotal role in the education sector.

He advocated for improved working conditions to enhance teachers’ motivation, which he said would directly benefit learners by enhancing the quality of education.
