Prof Elijah Omwenga Appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Open University of Kenya
The Open University of Kenya (OUK) Council has officially appointed Prof Elijah Omwenga as the new Vice-Chancellor, with his term beginning on April 17, 2025. His appointment comes after more than a year and a half of service in an acting capacity.
This confirmation was outlined in a formal notice signed by Prof Ezra Maritim, Chairman of the University Council. He emphasized the importance of this decision, noting it as a crucial step in the university’s development journey. Prof Maritim expressed confidence in Omwenga’s leadership, stating it would steer OUK towards growth, stability, and realization of its strategic goals.

Prof Maritim pointed out that Omwenga’s steady guidance during the university’s early stages, alongside his expertise in computer science, has been instrumental. His previous role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Kabianga further demonstrates his capability to lead and expand the university’s virtual learning agenda.
He also encouraged the entire university community to back the new Vice-Chancellor in achieving OUK’s mission. According to him, collective support is vital in maintaining progress and long-term institutional stability.
