PSC Announces Vice Chancellor and Other Vacancies at Kenyan Universities.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) has posted job openings for various senior positions, including the Vice Chancellor at the University of Nairobi.
This follows the ousting of Prof. Stephen Kiama, who was removed from his post by the university’s Council in 2024.
Vice Chancellor Vacancy at University of Nairobi
The University of Nairobi is seeking a new Vice Chancellor to replace Prof. Kiama. His tenure was ended in October 2024, when the university’s Council terminated his employment.
In a memo from the Council Chair, Prof. Amukowa Anangwe, it was communicated that Prof. Kiama’s services were officially concluded as of September 27, 2024. However, the exact reasons for his removal were not made public.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Positions Advertised
Along with the Vice Chancellor role, the PSC has also advertised the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Nairobi.
Similarly, other institutions such as Kenyatta University have vacancies for the positions of Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance.
Further Vacancies Across Institutions
In notices published on January 21, 2025, in the My Gov pullout, the PSC has outlined several other vacancies across various institutions. These include:
- Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at the University of Nairobi
- Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration and Finance) at Kenyatta University

The PSC’s announcement states that these roles are open to qualified candidates in line with the Universities Act 2012, amended by the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act No. 18 of 208.
The University of Nairobi Council made the decision to end Prof. Kiama’s tenure in October last year. While the termination was confirmed through a memo, the public was not informed of the specific reasons behind the decision.
