Public University Lecturers to Receive Salary Increment Arrears this Month.
Lecturers and non-teaching staff in public universities are set to receive salary increment arrears for October and November alongside their December salaries.
This follows an agreement between their unions and the government, marking the initial implementation of the Sh9.7 billion deal that ended a month-long nationwide strike that paralyzed learning in public universities.
The initial phase of the agreement involves Sh4.3 billion, with payment details finalized by a technical committee comprising representatives from the government, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, and Hospital Workers (KUDHEIHA).
The committee convened at Machakos University from November 27 to December 3, 2024.

The committee resolved that arrears from July 2023 to September 2024 will be paid in two equal installments during the 2025–2026 and 2026–2027 financial years. This process implements the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Universities’ Allocations and Salary Adjustments
According to official documents, the University of Nairobi will receive the highest allocation of Sh1,492,792,804, while the Open University of Kenya is set to get the lowest allocation at Sh2,161,206.
Graduate and research assistants at job grade 10 will now earn a minimum basic salary of Sh63,647, up from Sh57,729, while their maximum pay increases to Sh97,988 from Sh82,552.
Professors and research professors will see their basic pay rise from the current range of Sh209,694–Sh283,087 to Sh224,631–Sh345,816.
In addition to basic salaries, university staff will continue receiving house allowances ranging between Sh35,383 and Sh73,715, depending on their job group.
Union members will also benefit as the agreement stipulates that universities deduct 2% of basic salaries monthly as union dues or agency fees, including arrears.
These funds will be deposited in respective union accounts. Local union chapters are tasked with overseeing the proper implementation of the CBA, including ensuring accurate placement in job grades and proper allocation of funds.
Harmonized Retirement Age
The agreement also harmonizes retirement ages for academic staff. Graduate assistants, tutorial fellows, and assistant lecturers will retire at 70 years, while lecturers, senior lecturers, associate professors, and professors will retire at 74 years.
