Ruto Assures Confirmation of 46,000 JSS Intern Teachers in Two Months

President William Ruto has pledged to confirm all 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers to permanent and pensionable positions within the next two months.

He explained that the government has already allocated the necessary funds, and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is currently working on the confirmation process.

“All the 46,000 teachers that were interns I am going to confirm them in the next two months. We have given the money for their confirmation, now Teacher Service Commission is working on the process to confirm all of them.” He said during the Townhall meeting in Kisumu County.

Ruto emphasized that the decision to hire interns was strategic, allowing the government to address the teacher shortage by utilizing a large pool of trained but unemployed teachers.

Ruto said these interns, who were previously earning little to nothing, now earn Ksh 25,000, with a guaranteed transition to permanent employment after two years.

In addition to the confirmation of current JSS intern teachers, President Ruto announced plans to hire an additional 20,000 interns. These new interns will also be considered for permanent positions as the program progresses.

He acknowledged the valuable contributions of JSS teachers, describing them as “solid patriots of the Republic of Kenya” who have significantly improved the country’s education outcomes.

Addressing Union Concerns

President Ruto addressed recent tensions with teachers’ unions, particularly regarding calls for strikes.

He clarified that the issues raised by the unions had already been resolved, with the government honoring the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the unions.

He reassured that all teachers would receive their salaries and arrears as per the CBA, and urged teachers to focus on their duties rather than engaging in unnecessary strikes.
