Ruto Suspends Recruitment of 20,000 New Teachers This Year
President William Ruto has announced that the planned recruitment of additional teachers this year will not proceed as initially intended.
This decision comes in light of budgetary constraints following the withdrawal of the Finance Bill, 2024.
He indicated that the plan to employ 20,000 teachers this year is on hold and will be reassessed next year based on the state of the economy.
Assurance to Junior Secondary School Teachers
Ruto reassured the 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers that their confirmation will proceed as previously agreed.
He emphasized that despite the financial challenges, the government is committed to confirming the JSS teachers within the year.
The head of state highlighted the importance of teachers working with the knowledge that they will serve under permanent and pensionable terms, as agreed.
“I want to tell all JSS teachers that despite the challenges we have in the Finance bill, we are going to make sure that we confirm them this year,” he said.
Financial Implications and Adjustments
The government had intended to fully employ the JSS teachers, who are currently on internships, at a cost of Sh18.3 billion.
However, the collapse of the Finance Bill has left a budget deficit of Sh346 billion. Ruto stated that the government plans to borrow Sh169 billion to cover part of the shortfall, rather than the entire amount.
Ruto made these remarks during the official opening of the Kimuka power substation in Kajiado West. He announced that 20,000 additional households in Kajiado will be connected to the power grid this year.
