Schools in Nyeri to Establish Emergency and Disaster Committees.
Schools across Nyeri County are in the process of establishing disaster management committees, according to Nyeri Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Joseph Mwangi.
These committees are intended to address emergencies and crises that may arise within schools.
Purpose and Functions of the Committees
The DCC explained that the decision was reached after a meeting with school heads, where it was agreed that the committees would also offer guidance and counseling services to students.
The need for these committees was highlighted by recent incidents, including a fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy and a concerning increase in student unrest, which has led several schools to send students home.
Mwangi noted that three boys’ secondary schools in the county had recently experienced student uprisings, resulting in damage to school property.
In response, the decision was made that all schools must have disaster management committees established by the end of October.
These committees will not only handle emergencies but also include counseling psychologists, as declining student discipline is often linked to a lack of proper counseling.
Mashujaa Day Celebrations and Fire Preparedness
The DCC shared these updates while speaking at the 61st Mashujaa Day Celebrations held at Dedan Kimathi Kamkunji Grounds in Nyeri town.

During the event, the county’s fire department conducted fire drills to assess residents’ preparedness for fire emergencies. The public was also educated on safety measures to take during such situations.
Mwangi further mentioned that the county government would collaborate with the fire department to provide fire drill sessions across all eight sub-counties.
He confirmed the county’s commitment to supporting training efforts to enhance the community’s ability to respond to emergencies.
Exam Preparations
On the topic of exam preparations, Mwangi assured that the government had made sufficient security arrangements ahead of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams.
Security personnel will be stationed at all examination centers to ensure the integrity of the exams is maintained.
The DCC emphasized the government’s collaboration with the Ministry of Education to prevent any instances of cheating in the county.
Fight Against Illicit Brews and Drugs
Mwangi also addressed the ongoing fight against illicit alcohol and drugs in Nyeri County, noting that the county had achieved a 95% success rate.
He mentioned that the security team was focusing on eradicating the remaining 5% of illegal brews. Mwangi commended the public for their cooperation, especially in providing valuable information to security authorities.
