Secondary Schools Asked to Share Laboratory Facilities with JSS
Secondary schools across the country have been encouraged to share their laboratory spaces and facilities with neighboring Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).
This call to action is aimed at addressing the lack of laboratory resources in JSS, which hampers the effective implementation of the new curriculum.
Joseph Kagwiru, a teacher at MCK Upper Mikumbune Day School, highlighted that JSS nationwide are facing significant challenges due to the absence of laboratories.
He pointed out that secondary schools have the necessary facilities and should assist JSS in providing access to these resources.
To tackle these challenges, Kagwiru has introduced mobile laboratories to serve several junior secondary schools that are far from well-equipped secondary schools.

These mobile labs are designed to offer Science equipment and materials for practical lessons to JSS learners.
According to Kagwiru, more than five neighboring JSS have already benefited from this initiative, which was essential because many JSS do not have laboratories or are not located near any secondary schools.
Government’s Role and Recommendations
The Kenyan government, in its efforts to improve the education sector, recently introduced the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) as a replacement for the old 8-4-4 system, which was primarily knowledge-based.
