Slow Student Applications Worry KUCCPS Officials as Deadline Nears.

Three weeks after the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) opened its portal for higher education applications, there has been a concerningly low turnout. Out of an expected 246,000 applicants, only 104,000 have submitted their applications so far.

With only a week remaining before the portal closes, Ministry of Education officials are expressing concern over the slow pace of registration. The figures indicate a sluggish response, triggering a sense of urgency within the Ministry.

In response to the low numbers, Ministry officials have been dispatched across the country to raise awareness and encourage timely registration. They have been visiting different regions to engage both students and their parents on the importance of applying within the designated timeline.

According to Prof. John Oluoch, Director for Placement and Career Development at KUCCPS, officers have been sent from Nairobi to all 47 counties to assist with the registration exercise.

He noted that although the numbers are still below half of the expected total, there is optimism that the remaining time will yield better results. Prof. Oluoch emphasized that the system infrastructure had been fully prepared and functioning well, urging students to take advantage of the opportunity.

In Kisii County, the officials interacted directly with stakeholders, offering clarity on several issues that had caused confusion during the application process. Students were able to voice concerns and receive guidance on areas they found challenging.

Additionally, students enrolled in medical courses at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) took the opportunity to request inclusion in the higher education funding program. They appealed to the government to extend financial support to help cover their academic expenses.
