SRC Opposes Plan To Reduce Civil Servants’ Retirement Age to 55
Lyn Mengich, Chairperson of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, has expressed objection to the parliament’s proposal to lower the retirement age for civil servants.
During a conversation with journalists on Tuesday, April 2, Mengich voiced concern that reducing the retirement age might result in a greater population reliant on pensions yet still capable of contributing effectively.
Currently, civil servants retire at the age of 60, while those with disabilities retire at 65. However, a proposal before a parliamentary committee proposes to reduce the required retirement age to 55.
Parliament claims that this measure is intended to provide job opportunities and aid the integration of Kenya’s youth into the civil service.
Mengich opposed lowering the retirement age, claiming that it would not tackle the underlying difficulties and would only result in more people relying on pensions, burdening the workforce unnecessarily.
She underlined that 55-year-old employees can still be productive and make meaningful contributions to the country.

“It is unnecessary to retire them early when they can still contribute effectively,” Mengich went on to say.
She went on to explain that this group might still earn money rather than be regarded as redundant. Instead of lowering the retirement age, Mengich proposed exploring alternative strategies for job development.
In response to worries over the present government wage bill, Mengich emphasized the significance of privatizing state enterprises as a means of cutting spending. She also brought up the issue of role duplication, which has contributed to Kenya’s bloated wage costs and burdened taxpayers.

Civil servants and trade unions are opposing the Public Service Amendment Bill, 2023, which calls for lowering the retirement age. These groups believe that such a change would breach contracts struck with the government during employment.
