Teachers and Parents’ Collaboration Key to Supporting Deaf Children, Experts Say.

The importance of collaboration between parents, teachers, and audiology experts in supporting deaf children was a central theme during the second day of the Africa Conference on Deafness held in Nairobi.

The event brought together experts, advocates, and policymakers to address challenges facing the deaf community and emphasize the need for an inclusive society.

Rhoda Kabiti, CEO of the Kenya Society for Deaf Children (KSDC), underscored the significance of collective efforts in identifying hearing impairments early to ensure children receive adequate support.

She noted that overcoming barriers such as language differences is crucial in enabling deaf children to thrive. Highlighting the dedication of teachers, Kabiti called on educators to remain committed to promoting sign language education.

She emphasized that creating an inclusive learning environment demands not just knowledge but also compassion and dedication.

Systemic Barriers to Justice for PLWDs

Lady Justice Nyakundi, the Chief Guest Representative, addressed systemic barriers preventing people with disabilities (PLWDs), including those who are deaf, from accessing justice.

She discussed the communication challenges and social stigma that often hinder their participation in legal proceedings.

While acknowledging progress made through legislative reforms, she stressed the need for further changes to ensure inclusivity in the justice system.

Justice Nyakundi reiterated that access to justice is a fundamental right and called for a reevaluation of approaches to make the system more accommodating.

Financial Challenges in Hearing Solutions

Audiologist Sarah Ndegwa highlighted the financial difficulties associated with acquiring assistive devices for the deaf.

She emphasized the importance of early intervention in treating hearing loss, cautioning that delays can result in more expensive and complicated solutions in the future.

Ndegwa advocated for prioritizing hearing health to mitigate long-term financial and social consequences, underscoring the need for greater investment in early hearing solutions.

The conference, now in its final stages, provided a platform to discuss the multifaceted issues faced by the deaf community.

Participants agreed that sustained collaboration and dedication are essential in ensuring that deaf children receive the support and opportunities they deserve.

As the event concludes tomorrow, a key declaration is expected to outline strategies for fostering impactful changes for deaf children and advancing inclusivity in society.
