Teachers Calls for TSC CEO Nancy Macharia Resignation Amid Allegations of Corruption and Mismanagement
There is increasing pressure for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO and Secretary, Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia, to step down as educators plan a protest at the TSC offices in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The campaign, dubbed #OccupyTSC, continues to grow traction with Generation Z activists and teachers taking to social media to demand her resignation.
Critics accuse Macharia of overseeing extensive corruption in the hiring processes at the TSC.
They also claim she has mistreated teachers and undermined the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
Another major grievance is her alleged refusal to recognize teachers’ Diplomas and Degrees since January 2014, which has led to job stagnation and diminished morale among educators.
Political Interference in Teacher Employment
Since President William Ruto assumed office in 2022, there have been numerous instances of politicians, including MPs and Cabinet Secretaries, publicly distributing TSC employment letters at funerals and community events (harambees).

The most recent example involved former Education CS Ezekiel Machogu in Kisii County, which ignited a social media outcry.
These actions bypass the merit-based process that TSC is supposed to follow for teacher replacement interviews.
Consequently, political figures often allocate jobs without considering qualifications such as graduation year, grades, age, or internship experience.
This has led to newer graduates receiving opportunities over their more experienced peers.
Activist Gabriel Oguda voiced the public sentiment on social media, insisting that Macharia should resign immediately.
He accused her of facilitating corruption by allowing MPs to distribute employment letters to their relatives and girlfriends.
Oguda warned that if Macharia does not resign, protesters would occupy the TSC offices to demand her removal.
Macharia’s Tenure and Background
Nancy Macharia, who took office on June 30, 2015, is scheduled to complete her ten-year term on June 30, 2025.
Born in Murang’a in 1963, she succeeded Gabriel Lengoiboni. At 61 years old, Macharia might be compelled to retire early following President Ruto’s directive for public servants aged 60 and above to step down.
