Teachers Demand Revised Leave Allowances, Seek Half of Basic Pay.
Teachers across the country are urging the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to review their annual leave allowances.

A survey conducted by Teachers Arena revealed that most teachers advocate for leave allowances equivalent to half of their basic salaries, based on job groups. This adjustment would align their benefits closer to those received by civil servants.
Teachers’ unions, including Knut, Kuppet, and Kusnet, have been encouraged to incorporate these demands into the ongoing negotiations for the 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
This push is seen as a necessary step to address disparities in leave allowance payments.
Current Leave Allowance Structure
Currently, teachers receive an annual leave allowance, disbursed together with January salaries.
The rates are determined by job groups, with the lowest group, B5, receiving Ksh 4,000 and the highest, D5, getting Ksh 10,000. This allowance structure has remained unchanged under the 2021-2025 CBA.

Teachers employed by TSC are entitled to a maximum of thirty days of annual leave with full pay each calendar year, regardless of their terms of service.
However, this leave can only be taken during school holidays and cannot be carried forward to subsequent years.
Applications for annual leave must be submitted online as per the guidelines outlined in the Twenty-Seventh Schedule of the TSC Code of Regulations for Teachers (CORT).
Automation of Leave Applications
Since December 1, 2021, TSC has automated the leave application and approval process. All teachers on the TSC payroll, including interns, are now required to submit their leave applications via the online system. The types of leave available on this platform include:
- Sick Leave
- Annual Leave
- Compassionate Leave
- Paternity Leave
- Maternity Leave
- Study Leave
- Special Leave
- Adoption Leave
- Spouse of Diplomat Leave
