Teachers Have Until January 31 to Update AON Minet Dependants.
AON Minet, the medical service provider for teachers, has set January 31, 2025, as the deadline for teachers who wish to update their list of dependants. A dependant refers to an immediate family member covered by the scheme, which includes a spouse and up to four children.
Teachers who intend to modify their dependants must log in to the portal to add or remove dependants while providing the necessary supporting documents.
These documents include a scanned copy of the spouse’s ID, a birth notification for children below six months, and a birth certificate for children older than six months. Additionally, a marriage certificate or a sworn affidavit is mandatory as proof of marriage.
Coverage and Eligibility
AON Minet is one of the largest medical insurance providers, covering over 376,000 teachers on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) payroll. However, the scheme does not extend to TSC intern teachers or those on contract.
In early January 2025, TSC renewed its contract with Minet Kenya Insurance Brokers Limited after reaching an agreement with the government. Initially, there were speculations that the scheme would be revoked and all TSC teachers transferred to the Social Health Authority (SHA). However, following negotiations, AON Minet secured a two-year contract to continue providing medical services.
This contract extension ensures that teachers can continue accessing essential healthcare benefits without interruption. Since December 2022, Minet has been managing the TSC medical scheme, and this extension maintains the existing structure, which includes routine outpatient care and specialized treatments.
Coverage Based on Job Group
One of the notable aspects of the TSC-Minet medical scheme is its adjustment of benefits based on a teacher’s job group. Teachers in lower job groups, such as Primary Teacher II (Grade B5), receive Ksh1 million for inpatient coverage and Ksh150,000 for outpatient care.
Senior educators, including Chief Principals (Job Group D5), have access to Ksh3 million for inpatient care and Ksh450,000 for outpatient needs.
Some benefits remain uniform across all job groups, including:
- Dental Cover: Ksh45,000
- Optical Cover: Ksh60,000
- Last Expense Cover: Ksh300,000
Maternity benefits vary based on job grades, ranging from Ksh120,000 for Grade B5 to Ksh300,000 for Grade D5. The scheme covers teachers aged between 18 and 65 years, along with their dependants.
Eligible children can be covered from birth until 18 years old or up to 25 years if they are still in school. Notably, there is no age limit for children with certified disabilities.
