Teachers’ Unions Demand Immediate Transfer of Bungoma Education Director.

Representatives from both KUPPET and KNUT, the teachers‘ unions in Bungoma County, are calling for the immediate transfer of the county’s education director. The unions have accused the director, Pius Ng’oma, of mistreating and threatening headteachers and principals, prompting this urgent demand for his removal.

In a joint press briefing outside the Director of Education’s office in Bungoma, Augustine Kundu Luketelo, the KUPPET Branch Executive Secretary General, outlined several grievances against the director. He alleged that Ng’oma had been visiting schools across the county to solicit funds, which had delayed the clearance of school capitation meant for infrastructural development.

Luketelo expressed concerns that these delays were impacting the timely participation of schools in extracurricular activities such as sports, drama, and music competitions, as the necessary funds were not being disbursed promptly.

Luketelo further criticized the government’s practice of issuing Teachers Service Commission (TSC) employment forms to politicians at State House. He argued that this practice was undermining labor laws and demoralizing veteran teachers, as recent graduates seemed to be receiving preferential treatment through nepotism.

Concerns over Communication and Collaboration

Echoing Luketelo’s sentiments, Robert Mandila, the Bungoma East KNUT Branch Executive Secretary, highlighted ongoing issues with the county director’s refusal to engage in discussions with union representatives.

Luketelo stressed the importance of an all-inclusive approach to tackling the challenges in the education sector and expressed frustration over the director’s lack of cooperation with educational stakeholders.

Mandila appealed directly to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba, urging him to transfer the director due to the deteriorating working relationship with key education stakeholders in the county. Both unions have expressed their belief that such a move is crucial to restoring effective leadership and improving the educational environment in Bungoma.
