Technical University of Mombasa to Offer Medicine Courses After CUE Approval.
Mombasa County is set to witness a major academic milestone as the Technical University of Mombasa prepares to offer medicine degree courses. Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff confirmed that the Commission for University Education (CUE) has already granted the institution approval to introduce the program.
Following a County Executive Committee meeting held on Tuesday, April 29, the governor reported that the County Department of Health had also signed a formal agreement with the university to support the rollout of the program. He emphasized that the county government, through its health department, had successfully partnered with the institution to bring medical education closer to local students.
The governor noted that this development would inspire Mombasa’s youth to consider pursuing careers in medicine, a move expected to strengthen the county’s healthcare system over the long term. He described the decision as a historic milestone that would allow young people to study medicine within the region and eventually contribute to their communities as medical professionals.
Sheriff stressed that the initiative marks a turning point in expanding opportunities for local students and building a sustainable health workforce. According to him, providing access to quality medical education locally would not only empower the youth but also enhance the capacity of healthcare services in Mombasa.
University Joins Prestigious List of Medical Institutions
The Technical University of Mombasa will now join an elite group of 13 universities approved by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) to offer medical and dental programs.
These include the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Kenyatta University, Egerton University, Kenya Methodist University, Maseno University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Mount Kenya University, Uzima University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kisii University, The Aga Khan University, and Pwani University.
By joining this list, the Technical University of Mombasa becomes one of the few institutions in the country offering such prestigious courses, marking a significant achievement for higher education in the coastal region.
In addition to academic expansion, the governor reiterated the county’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure. He announced ongoing projects such as the construction of the Kongowea Level 4 Hospital and renovations at the Likoni Subcounty Hospital. These upgrades are part of a broader plan to enhance service delivery and expand medical access across the county.
Sheriff mentioned that these facilities would be outfitted with advanced diagnostic tools, including MRI and CT scanning machines, to support both medical education and patient care.

Governor Personally Oversees Reforms
In a further display of commitment to healthcare improvement, the governor revealed that he had temporarily relocated his office to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital. He explained that this move was aimed at closely monitoring reforms and ensuring swift implementation of service delivery improvements.
“This week, I have moved my office to the Coast General Hospital to personally oversee and accelerate the service reforms we are implementing,” he said. Another statement he made was that this initiative symbolized the county’s resolve to place health and education at the heart of its development agenda.
