Trainee teachers who did not pass certain subjects or assessments have been directed to visit the nearest Teacher Training College (TTC) to register for their final resit assessments and examinations.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) emphasized the importance of completing this registration by 30th December 2024, as the final examinations and assessments are scheduled for November 2025.
Exams Available for Registration
KNEC outlined five key exams and assessments open for repeaters:
- Primary Teacher Education (PTE)
- Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE)
- Upgrade Diploma in Primary Education (UDPTE)
- Upgrade Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (UDECTE)
- Diploma and Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE)
Registration commenced on 7th November 2024 and will close on 30th December 2024. TTCs have been given access to the registration portal to enroll both continuing students and those repeating teaching courses that have been discontinued.
Phased-Out Courses and Replacements
Several teaching courses, including PTE, ECDE, DPTE, and DECTE, have been discontinued and replaced with the Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE).
Starting next year, nursery and primary trainee teachers will study a unified three-year DTE program, requiring a minimum KCSE grade of C (plain).

These changes are part of the reforms introduced by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER).
Upon graduation, these teachers will be registered by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to teach nursery and primary school classes (PP1, PP2, and Grades 1–6).
Graduates can seek employment through the county government or TSC once they receive their TSC numbers.

Implementation of Reforms
The reforms introduced by PWPER aim to standardize teacher training programs while streamlining employment processes.
Teacher Training Colleges will begin admitting students into the new DTE program next year, consolidating training for nursery and primary education into one course.
A circular from KNEC detailed the registration requirements and was addressed to Principals of Diploma Training Teacher Colleges and Sub County Audit and Continuing Education Officers, highlighting the importance of adherence to the new framework.
Reassessments Debate
Few issues in education today spark as much debate as the question of whether students should be allowed to retake assessments.
Supporters of reassessments argue that this approach alleviates test anxiety and provides students with a better opportunity to showcase their learning. They believe reassessments encourage mastery of material by allowing students to improve their performance.
On the other hand, critics claim that reassessments undermine students’ drive to prepare thoroughly for initial tests, fostering ineffective study habits that may leave them unready for future academic or professional challenges.

At the very least, they insist that reassessment privileges should be contingent on strict prerequisites.
Additionally, many teachers express concerns about the fairness of awarding equal grades to students who performed well on the initial test and to those who scored similarly only after benefiting from additional review and study time.
