Treasury Disburses Sh36 Billion School Capitation Funds for Second Term
The government has released Sh36 billion in capitation funds for the second term of this academic year, coinciding with the schools’ three-day mid-term break.
This funding supports the free day secondary, free primary, and free day junior secondary school programs.
Fund Allocation Breakdown
- Secondary Schools: Sh19 billion
- Junior Secondary Schools: Sh14 billion
- Primary Schools: Sh2.74 billion
Usage and Disbursement
Willy Kuria, the chairman of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association, acknowledged the disbursement but expressed concerns about the lack of government guidance on fund usage.
He indicated that while funds are being deposited into school accounts, suppliers are already demanding payment, and schools are likely to use the funds to settle existing debts.
Schools with accounts in National and Equity banks have received the funds, with other banks expected to process the deposits by Friday.
Government’s Stance
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, during the launch of the fourth National Education Sector Strategic Plan 2023-27, mentioned that schools had already received 50 percent of the total capitation for the first term.
He assured that the government is working to ensure the release of second-term capitation within the month, preventing any school closures. For the second term, schools will receive 30 percent of the total capitation, with the remaining 20 percent to be disbursed in the third term.
