To ensure that teachers possess the necessary skills and knowledge, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has established specific academic requirements for graduate teachers aspiring to secure internship positions in JSS.
This guide outlines the key academic qualifications needed for those seeking to embark on a teaching career in junior secondary schools, emphasizing the importance of adhering to these standards for professional development and effective teaching practices.
1. Minimum Academic Qualifications
Graduate teachers must meet the following criteria:
- Mean Grade at KCSE:
- A minimum of C+ (plus).
- Performance in Teaching Subjects:
- At least C+ (plus) in each of the two teaching subjects.

Alternatively, candidates may qualify with:
- Two (2) Principles and one (1) Subsidiary pass at A-Level.
2. Required Educational Degrees
Eligible applicants must hold one of the following degrees:
- Bachelor of Education Degree:
- Must include two teaching subjects.
- Bachelor of Science or Arts Degree:
- Must be accompanied by a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), with two teaching subjects.
- Bachelor of Science with Education or Bachelor of Arts with Education:
- Both must include two teaching subjects.
- Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education and Extension:
- This must also comprise two teaching subjects.
3. Additional Qualifications for Eligibility
Applicants who meet these additional criteria are also eligible:
- Bachelor of Education Holders:
- Must have a mean grade of C Plain and C Plain in the two teaching subjects at KCSE, along with a Diploma in Education.
- Alternatively, those with a mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE and C (Plain) in the subjects studied at A-Level, provided they achieved at least 1 Principle and 2 Subsidiaries for Sciences or 2 Principles and 1 Subsidiary for Arts prior to pursuing a Bachelor of Education Degree.
- Diploma in Education Holders:
- Must have a mean grade of C+ (Plus) and C+ (Plus) in the two teaching subjects at KCSE and completed a Bachelor of Education Degree.
- Bridging/Pre-University Certificates:
- Recognized for those who completed the course before December 31st, 2015.
4. Key Considerations for Graduate Applicants
- All applicants must have studied the two teaching subjects at KCSE, except for Agriculture, Business Studies, Home Science, and Computer Studies.
- For candidates who did not study Business Studies or Computer Studies, a minimum of C+ (Plus) in Mathematics at KCSE is required.
- For those who did not study Agriculture and Home Science, a minimum of C+ in Biology at KCSE is necessary.
- Graduate teachers should have completed a minimum of eight (8) course units in each teaching subject, including Special Methods and a minimum of three (3) months of teaching practice.
5. Enhancements and Previous Employment
- Enhancement certificates and transcripts will be accepted if the applicant had not covered the minimum number of units during their degree program.
- Previous teachers whose contracts were terminated due to inadequate units but who have since obtained enhancement certificates with adequate units are eligible to reapply.
