TSC Affirms Support Systems for Teachers Facing Mental Health Challenges.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO, Dr. Nancy Macharia, has announced that the Commission has established essential frameworks to provide support for teachers facing mental health challenges.

She emphasized that mental health remains a significant issue among educators in Kenya, and the TSC has put measures in place to address this concern to ensure teachers can perform their duties effectively.

“Mental health is a major problem among teachers in Kenya and as a Commission we have laid down measures to address the matter to ensure our teachers perform their duties effectively,” she said.

Achievements of the TSC in 2023

Dr. Macharia was speaking in Nakuru during World Teachers Day, where she highlighted key accomplishments made by the Commission this year.

According to her, these achievements have contributed to improving education standards and enhancing the quality of services delivered by teachers.

One of the main milestones she mentioned was the successful negotiation and full implementation of the 2021/2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), for which she expressed gratitude to the government for prioritizing the welfare of teachers.

Additionally, Dr. Macharia reported that the TSC has promoted 50,856 teachers across the country and registered 40,994 teachers nationwide. She also mentioned that the Commission hired 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers.

Teacher Recruitment and Training Initiatives

Dr. Macharia further revealed that the Commission has recently advertised 46,000 permanent and pensionable teaching positions.

Furthermore, she noted that 52,688 teachers have been retooled in the current financial year, equipping them with new skills to improve the quality of education services.

These remarks were delivered through a speech read by the Commission’s Director of Legal Services, Calvin Anyuor, on behalf of Dr. Macharia.
