TSC Asks Teachers to Report to School After Securing CBA Funds
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has urged all teachers to report to school on Monday, following the announcement on Wednesday, August 21, that funds have been secured for the delayed implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
This call comes as unions consider the withdrawal of a previously issued strike notice.
The TSC’s directive follows President William Ruto’s instructions for the commission to engage with key unions—Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET). The unions had issued a strike notice due to unresolved issues affecting public school teachers.
TSC Secretary Nancy Macharia stated that the government has allocated funds for the second phase of the CBA, effective from July 1, 2024.

Teachers are expected to resume their duties as schools open for the third term. The delayed implementation of the CBA was a significant focus in the recent discussions between the TSC and the unions.
Addressing Union Concerns
In addition to the CBA, the commission addressed several other concerns raised by the unions:
- The review of Career Progression Guidelines.
- Timely remittance of third-party deductions.
- Access to both public and private hospitals under the Teachers Medical Scheme.
Macharia noted that the government has also provided resources for retooling teachers to support the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The TSC has promoted 51,232 teachers through competitive processes, with an additional 20,000 teachers being promoted annually through common cadre promotions.
The unions have acknowledged the TSC’s efforts and will consult their internal bodies regarding the strike notice. Macharia commended the unions for working to ensure that learning in schools is not disrupted during the third term.
