TSC Begins Retooling Programme for JSS Teachers and Field Officers.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has initiated a retooling programme for field officers, setting the stage for a similar exercise targeting Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers scheduled for next week.

This initiative aims to enhance the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) by equipping key personnel with updated skills and knowledge.

Since Wednesday, the TSC has been focused on sensitizing and training sub-county directors, curriculum support officers (CSOs), and quality assurance and standards officers.

These officers, acting as trainers of trainers (ToTs), are receiving comprehensive instruction on CBC. While regular CSO and sub-county director training is conducted at the county level, training for CSOs specializing in Special Needs Education (SNE) is organized at regional hubs.

Education News revealed that two to three counties are grouped together for SNE CSO training. However, this arrangement has prompted officers in this category to request the commission to address the cost implications of regional sessions.

Next Week’s Retooling of JSS Teachers

The upcoming retooling for JSS teachers marks a departure from previous exercises, with a rigorous focus on unpacking curriculum design.

Teachers will gain practical insights into delivering specific subjects while considering the diverse needs of learners, particularly those requiring special education.

Additionally, CSO SNE officers will be trained to implement the curriculum effectively for learners with special needs.

This training will emphasize the characteristics of JSS learners, learner-centred pedagogies, pre-vocational level traits in SNE schools, and effective communication techniques suited for junior school learners.
