TSC Enrolls 39,550 JSS Teachers into Kuppet, Deducts Union Dues.

A total of 39,550 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers, confirmed to permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms in January 2025, have officially been enrolled in a union.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has included them in the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) membership, effective February 2025.

The February TSC payslips indicate that these teachers have had Kuppet union dues of Ksh. 890 deducted, solidifying their membership. Their inclusion is seen as a significant boost for Kuppet, which has been grappling with declining numbers.

Despite their enrollment in Kuppet, JSS teachers have been advocating for the formation of their own union, the Kenya Junior School Teachers Association (KEJUSTA). This movement reflects their desire for a dedicated representation that directly addresses their specific needs.

KEJUSTA has called for an investigation after an incident where Vincent Onyancha, a teacher from Nyamira, was reportedly slapped and kicked by his headteacher in front of students.

The teacher, who is currently receiving medical care at a hospital in Ikonge, was allegedly attacked for arriving late. The association demands strict action against school heads mistreating JSS teachers.

Kuppet’s Support for JSS Teachers

Kuppet has consistently backed JSS teachers, advocating for their transition from internship terms to permanent employment. In August 2024, the union took to the streets alongside striking JSS intern teachers, demanding their immediate confirmation to PnP terms.

Efforts by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) to recruit JSS teachers have been met with rejection. The teachers have maintained that Knut primarily represents primary school educators, making it an unsuitable choice for their needs.

In response to the growing number of JSS teachers, Kuppet is restructuring its leadership to include JSS officials. This move aims to ensure that challenges faced by JSS teachers working in primary school environments are adequately addressed.
