This article focuses on the salary and allowances for teachers in Grade C2 – T SCALE 7. This group includes lecturers, primary school teachers, special needs education (SNE) teachers, secondary school teachers, and senior teachers.

Understanding the complexities of these financial arrangements is critical for teachers to make sound career and financial decisions.

Understanding Job Grade C2 in TSC

Job grade C2 is the entry-level position for registered teachers holding a bachelor’s degree in education. These individuals are university graduates employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) as first-time secondary school teachers. The C2 salary structure is specifically designed for secondary school educators who are newly employed by TSC.

The salary scale for grade C2 teachers is primarily determined by their qualifications and years of experience, with variations existing based on different factors.

According to the most recently signed CBA, the basic salary for instructors at Teacher Grade C2 (the entrance level for graduate teachers) stands at Sh4,164.

In addition to their salaries, teachers in grade C2 receive various allowances to support their work and living conditions. One key allowance is the housing allowance, which differs based on location.

Housing Allowance Based on Location

  • Teachers in Nairobi receive Ksh 16,500.
  • Those in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, and Kitale get Ksh 12,800.
  • Educators in other former municipalities are entitled to Ksh 9,600.
  • Teachers in all other regions receive Ksh 7,500.

Additional Allowances for Grade C2 Teachers

Beyond housing allowances, teachers receive other financial benefits, which include:

Hardship Allowance: Educators in Grades C2 and T Scale 7 are entitled to a hardship allowance of 10,900 KES.

Commuter Allowance: Teachers receive a 5,000 KES commuting allowance to help them with their daily commuting expenses.

Annual Leave Allowance: This allowance, worth 6,000 KES, highlights the value of teachers taking breaks and recharging during yearly leave.

The Disability Guide Allowance is a considerable boost to the allowances, totaling 20,000 KES. This allowance is also intended to provide additional support to educators who work with pupils with disabilities, recognizing the special challenges they confront.

How to Become a Grade C2 Teacher in Kenya

A diploma holder can be promoted to a grade C2 secondary teacher after serving for three years as a grade C1 teacher. However, individuals with a university degree can directly join as grade C2 teachers without prior service.

Furthermore, a diploma holder in grade C2 must undergo a promotional interview to advance to grade C3, whereas a degree holder in the same grade does not require such an interview.

Eligibility for a higher salary grade depends on the duration of service in the current grade. A teacher must serve at least three years before advancing, though the National Assembly has proposed reducing this to six months.

Additionally, professional growth, subject performance, participation in co-curricular activities, and leadership roles within the school are factors influencing promotion.

Variations in Teachers’ Allowances

While teachers in the same job group earn identical basic salaries, their allowances differ based on various factors. Educators in urban areas receive different housing allowances compared to those in rural regions. Furthermore, those teaching in hardship-designated areas receive additional hardship allowances.

Although the basic salary remains constant, allowances vary significantly. Teachers working in Nairobi receive higher housing allowances than those stationed in rural areas. The government also classifies some regions as hardship areas, where teachers qualify for hardship allowances.

Annual Salary Increment for Grade C2 Teachers

TSC introduced an annual salary increment in 2018, significantly affecting teachers’ earnings. As a result, teachers in grade C2 experience a yearly salary increase ranging from Ksh 1,000 to Ksh 6,000, depending on their salary scale.

The increments are primarily influenced by teachers’ experience, job groups, and the financial capacity of the commission.

The availability of funds from the government also plays a crucial role in determining salary adjustments. Recently, the National Assembly proposed allocating Ksh 1 billion for promotions this year, with an additional Ksh 2 billion earmarked for subsequent years.

With structured salary scales and multiple allowances, these educators receive financial support that enables them to fulfill their roles effectively.
