TSC Minimum Requirements for Teacher Registration; ECDE, PTE, Bachelor of Education

Joining the teaching profession under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is a common aspiration for many educators. However, the challenge remains in meeting the necessary qualifications. Some individuals fail to qualify due to a lack of required credentials.

This edition of Mwalimu News provides an overview of the academic and professional requirements essential for securing employment within the Commission.

Aspiring teachers can enter the profession through various pathways, including Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE), Primary Teacher Education (PTE), Diploma in Education, Special Needs Diploma in Education, Bachelor of Education, and Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Education. Each entry-level has specific academic requirements.

1. Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE)

  • Certificate Level: Requires a minimum KCSE mean grade of C (Plain) and an ECDE Certificate from KNEC.
  • Diploma Level: Applicants need a KCSE mean grade of C+ (Plus) and above for university diploma programs.
  • Degree Level: Candidates must attain a KCSE mean grade of C+ (Plus) or higher.

2. Primary Teacher Education (PTE)

  • Candidates must have at least a KCSE mean grade of C (Plain) or higher.
  • A PTE Certificate from KNEC is mandatory.
  • Individuals with visual or hearing impairments may qualify with a KCSE mean grade of C- (Minus).

3. Diploma in Education

  • A minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (Plus) is required, along with a C+ (Plus) in two specialization subjects.
  • Candidates must have at least a C (Plain) in English.
  • Science-based courses require a minimum of C (Plain) in Mathematics.
  • For non-science courses, a D+ (Plus) in Mathematics is sufficient.

4. Bachelor of Education

  • Applicants must attain a KCSE mean grade of C+ (Plus) or its equivalent.
  • A C+ (Plus) is also required in two specialization subjects.

5. Bachelor of Arts/Science in Education

  • Candidates must have at least a KCSE mean grade of C+ (Plus) and a C+ (Plus) in two specialization subjects.
  • A Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is necessary for qualification.
