TSC Reveals When to Convert Intern Teachers to Permanent and Pensionable Status

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer Ms. Nancy Macharia says that plans are underway to offer permanent and pensionable terms to those serving in public schools.

The TSC boss expressed confidence that adequate funds would be provided for this initiative during the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association conference in Mombasa.

Dr. Macharia has disclosed the commission’s plans to convert intern teachers to permanent and pensionable status once government funds are available.

“We are confident that adequate funds will be availed for the exercise,” the TSC boss said during the KESSHA conference in Mombasa.

The 46,000 teachers requested permanent employment from their employer. These graduate teachers have been serving as interns since 2019.

Omari Omari, the intern teachers national spokesman, urged the TSC to release a circular confirming their permanent and pensionable status following the passage of the Finance Bill, 2024.

This follows a proposal by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u to cut Sh18.9 billion from the budget allocated to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Ndung’u explained that this reduction is intended to help reduce the country’s Sh200 billion budget deficit, which arose after Kenya Kwanza MPs decided to eliminate certain tax proposals from the Finance Bill, 2024.
