TSC Schedules April Retooling Program for Junior School Teachers.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a retooling program for Junior School teachers specializing in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Assessment (CBA). The training is scheduled to take place between April 16 and April 25, 2025, under a structured approach aimed at enhancing teacher preparedness.

TSC has opted for a smart cascade model to ensure effective knowledge transfer. The training will commence with Master Trainers, who will then instruct Trainers of Trainers (ToTs). These ToTs will later facilitate face-to-face sessions for teachers at the county level, receiving professional support throughout the process.

The program will be carried out in multiple phases:

  • From April 9 to April 11, 2025, Master Trainers will undergo training at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE). Participants will be drawn from agencies including TSC, KICD, KNEC, KEMI, CEMASTEA, MOE, KISE, and TTCs.
  • Between April 16 and April 18, 2025, Trainers of Trainers (ToTs), comprising Curriculum Support Officers, Teacher Educators from TTCs, Quality Assurance Officers, and select Junior School teachers, will be trained at county-designated venues.
  • On April 19, 2025, sub-county and zonal coordination for the training will take place, involving Master Trainers, ToTs, and County Directors.
  • The final phase will run from April 21 to April 25, 2025, where Junior School teachers will receive retooling training in subject clusters, including both Special Needs Education (SNE) and regular programs.

Training Implementation and Structure

The training will be conducted face-to-face through a multi-agency approach. The structure is outlined as follows:

  • Master Trainers will train ToTs over three days.
  • ToTs will subsequently train teachers over a five-day period.
  • Master Trainers will provide professional support throughout the training sessions.
  • Residential arrangements will be made for teachers from Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) and SNE institutions, whereas non-ASAL participants will undergo non-residential training.
  • The training venues will include Teacher Training Colleges and other designated centers at the county level.

Target Participants and Learning Areas

The program is aimed at teachers who were employed in November and December 2024 to teach in Junior Schools, covering both regular and pre-vocational SNE settings. The teachers will be trained in subject clusters such as:

  • English, Kiswahili/Kenya Sign Language (KSL)
  • Mathematics
  • Religious Education and Social Studies (including Life Skills Education)
  • Integrated Science (Health Education)
  • Pre-Technical Studies, Agriculture, and Nutrition
  • Creative Arts and Sports

Role of Regional and County Directors

TSC has tasked Regional and County Directors with overseeing the training process. They are required to:

  • Coordinate the training sessions.
  • Secure separate venues for Regular and SNE teacher training.
  • Identify and formally invite participants as per the provided schedule.

The initiative underscores TSC’s commitment to ensuring that Junior School teachers are well-equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge for the successful implementation of CBC and CBA.
