TSC Set to Recruit 18,000 JSS Interns and 2,000 Primary School Interns.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to recruit 20,000 intern teachers in October this year.
This recruitment will consist of 18,000 junior secondary school interns and 2,000 primary school interns, contributing significantly to the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) implementation.
Support for CBC Implementation
Principal Secretary (PS) for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang, noted that 56,000 teachers have already been recruited in support of the CBC. The additional 20,000 will further boost these efforts.
To accommodate Grade 9 learners in January next year, the government is constructing 18,000 classrooms, with 11,000 classes being built in partnership with development agencies and 7,000 funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
Dr. Kipsang emphasized the government’s full commitment to the CBC and noted that they are working closely with all partners to ensure that necessary infrastructure is in place. He also reassured that plans for a smooth transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 in 2026 are well underway.
Internship and Permanent Employment Transition
TSC has also announced the confirmation of 46,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms.
This exercise, scheduled for January 2025, will be backed by an allocation of Ksh 18.7 billion.

In the interim, TSC extended the contracts of 18,000 junior secondary school (JSS) and 2,000 P1 intern teachers for four months, as their initial contracts were due to expire on 31st August 2024.
