TSC Sub-County Decry Compressed Deadlines in Teacher Recruitment Process: Dates And Schedules.
Sub-County Directors (SCDs) working under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) are struggling to keep up with tight deadlines in the ongoing teacher recruitment drive.
The TSC has set an ambitious timeframe for hiring 46,000 teachers across the country, requiring the SCDs to complete the process within just one week, from October 11 to October 17, 2024.
The recruitment exercise is taking place under intense pressure, with little to no support for essential resources.
The SCDs and other panel members, including Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), have not been provided with basic facilitation such as stationery, refreshments, or even lunch.
There is also no allocation for transport to and from recruitment venues, forcing staff to cover these expenses from their pockets.
Disparities in Treatment
While the field staff struggle with insufficient support, the commissioners overseeing the exercise travel across the country in large convoys of fuel-intensive vehicles.

The commissioners enjoy instant accommodation, meals, and attractive per diems during their supervisory roles, in stark contrast to the field staff who are left to endure the recruitment under challenging conditions.
Recruitment Breakdown: Step-by-Step Process
The recruitment schedule consists of the following phases:
Date | Activity Description |
---|---|
October 11, 2024 | Verification of all applicants’ documents. |
October 14, 2024 | Preparation of score guides based on verified documents. |
October 15, 2024 | Shortlisted candidates to fill employment forms at recruitment venues. |
October 16, 2024 | Drafting and signing of Letters of Offer of Employment for successful candidates. Submission of documents through the TSC recruitment portal. |
October 17, 2024 | Completion of the recruitment exercise by sending letters to respective schools. |
Each sub-county has been allocated a specific number of teachers to recruit across different categories, which include Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers, primary school teachers, and secondary school teachers.
The commission aims to hire 39,650 JSS teachers, 6,000 primary school teachers, and 450 secondary school teachers.
The TSC has received Ksh18 billion from the National Treasury to facilitate the recruitment of the 46,000 teachers.

However, the allocation appears insufficient at the operational level, as SCDs and other field staff are not experiencing the benefits of this funding, resulting in a disconnect between the budget and the ground realities of the exercise.
