TSC to Recruit 20000 Teachers by July – CS Machogu
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, the government intends to hire an additional 20,000 teachers in order to reduce the teacher-student ratio and address the country’s serious teacher shortage.
He announced the news during his speech at Kolanya Girl’s National School in Bungoma County on Wednesday. Machogu noted that the government has already hired more than 50,000 teachers since taking power in September 2022.
He went on to say, “Since taking office, this government has employed a record 56,750 teachers, and as a ministry, we have received additional funds to employ 20,000 teachers this fiscal year.”
Machogu reiterated the government’s commitment to improving school infrastructure statewide.
This commitment came in response to concerns voiced by Teso South MP Mary Emase, who encouraged the government to consider promoting teachers as a way to improve overall academic performance in schools.
Earlier conversations at the school exposed the serious consequences of the teacher shortage. The school principal bemoaned that they now have only 40 government-employed teachers, despite the fact that Ministry of Education rules call for more than 65.

Meanwhile, hundreds more instructors are still waiting for employment from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Despite efforts to improve the local teacher-student ratio, the TSC declared in February its plan to look into opportunities for instructors abroad.
Calvin Anyuor, TSC Director Legal, justified the move by claiming that Kenya has too many teachers. He stated, “We have started negotiations with key stakeholders about exporting our teaching workforce since we have an excess of instructors in the country.”
“We are working with the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other government agencies to ensure that our teachers may teach English in Germany.”

Currently, the TSC employs over 400,000 teachers, and it plans to hire 46,000 teacher interns on permanent and pensionable contracts by next year. These interns are approaching the end of their two-year contract term.
According to Dr. Reuben Nthamburi, Director of Quality Assurance at TSC, adding another 20,000 would greatly reduce the present shortage, which is estimated at 116,000.
