TSC Upcoming Teachers Recruitment and Confirmation of Interns
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to recruit 20,000 more teachers, as part of the government’s effort to improve the teacher-to-student ratio and address the significant teacher shortage in the country.
This announcement was made by Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, during his visit to Kolanya Girl’s National School in Bungoma County on Wednesday.
Machogu highlighted the administration’s efforts since September 2022, stating that over 50,000 teachers have already been hired.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the educational system, revealing that the Ministry of Education has secured additional funds for the recruitment of 20,000 teachers in the current fiscal year.
Addressing Teacher Shortage
Mary Emase, Member of Parliament for Teso South, had earlier called on the administration to recognize teachers more and provide incentives to boost student performance.
In response, Machogu reiterated his dedication to addressing the challenges within the educational sector.
The principal of Kolanya Girl’s National School had noted that the teacher shortage was adversely affecting the school, with only 40 government-employed teachers compared to the Ministry of Education’s target of 65.
TSC’s Plans and International Opportunities
Despite the employment of over 400,000 teachers, thousands remain unemployed. In February, the TSC announced discussions with the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among other partners, to find overseas job opportunities for surplus teachers.
Calvin Anyuor, TSC Director of Legal, mentioned the initiative to export Kenya’s excess teaching resources abroad, highlighting efforts to secure positions for Kenyan teachers to teach English in Germany.
Recruitment
The TSC plans to hire an additional 46,000 teacher interns on a permanent, pensionable basis by next year.
This move aims to further stabilize the teacher employment situation and provide long-term opportunities for aspiring educators.
