TSC Urges Teachers to Prioritize CBC Training Programs

Teachers have been encouraged to approach retooling programs with dedication and apply the knowledge gained in their classrooms effectively.

This call to action was made during the launch of a four-day retooling workshop for Junior Secondary School teachers in West Pokot sub-county.

TSC Deputy County Director Paul Kamas underscored the significance of the training, urging over 500 participants gathered at Nasokol Girls Secondary School to recognize the weight of the responsibility placed upon them.

He reminded them that their role in ensuring the success of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is crucial.

The Sub-County Director emphasized the importance of discipline, professionalism, and etiquette during the interactive sessions. Teachers were advised to provide constructive feedback on the challenges they encounter, with assurances of immediate follow-up after the workshop.

Key Preparations for Teachers

Robert Aleutum, the Sub-County Director overseeing the retooling exercise, highlighted the necessity for teachers to be well-prepared before entering the classroom.

He stressed the importance of maintaining professional records and thoroughly understanding subjects, particularly those not studied during university education.

Aleutum stated that the primary objective is to equip learners with enhanced scientific knowledge. He reaffirmed the commitment to providing full support across all learning areas, ensuring comprehensive education for students.

“Our priority at the moment is to equip learners with additional scientific knowledge and assured them of full support in all the learning areas,” he said.

Pedagogical Enhancements

Trainer Dr. Christopher Omusula encouraged teachers to actively engage learners during lessons.

He clarified the distinction between the Competency-Based Curriculum and Competency-Based Assessment, emphasizing the importance of this differentiation in classroom practice.

Dr. Nakhisa Kusimba, another trainer, urged teachers to embrace ICT integration in their teaching.

She noted that the workshop aimed to deepen understanding of the broad-based curriculum by leveraging pedagogical skills. Demonstrations and discussions, she added, play a pivotal role in uncovering learners’ talents and potential.

Nelson Musani, the county Curriculum Support Officer, reiterated the critical role teachers play in identifying students’ career paths and talents. He emphasized that teachers must use their insights to guide learners effectively, fostering individual growth and achievement.

This retooling exercise reflects an ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of education through teacher empowerment and modernized teaching approaches.
