TSC Warns Freshly Recruited Teachers Against Unnecessary Loans.
Nakuru County Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Director, Japhat Kariuki, has urged newly recruited Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to adopt responsible financial practices. He emphasized that effective money management is essential for achieving personal and professional financial goals.
Kariuki noted that some new teachers often succumb to the temptation of taking large loans irresponsibly, which later becomes a source of stress when repayment proves difficult. He advised them to live within their means, highlighting that this approach would not only allow them to enjoy the benefits of their hard work but also enable them to support their dependents effectively.
TSC officers, he said, have witnessed numerous cases of teachers struggling with financial burdens caused by unnecessary loans. He stressed that new teachers should exercise caution when considering loans to avoid jeopardizing their careers and well-being.
“We warn our new employed teachers to be good managers of their finances in order to avoid traps of receiving unnecessary loans which make some of them abdicate their duties,” said Kariuki.
Recruitment Prioritizes Science Teachers
During the recent recruitment drive, Kariuki highlighted that Science teachers were given priority due to the shortage of professionals in this field within Nakuru County. Most of the successful applicants were former secondary school teachers employed under boards of management, transitioning into permanent roles.
In contrast, there was an overwhelming number of applications from Languages and Humanities teachers compared to those in Science. Kariuki noted that Science teachers were preferred to address the imbalance and ensure adequate staffing for science-based subjects.
Kariuki also called on parents to guide their children toward pursuing careers in fields with promising opportunities. He pointed out that informed career choices would significantly contribute to a secure and prosperous future for the youth.

Kariuki emphasized that teachers must exercise financial discipline to avoid pitfalls associated with unnecessary borrowing. He observed that poor financial decisions could lead some teachers to neglect their professional responsibilities.
Additionally, he remarked on the recruitment process, stating that Science teachers were given precedence to fill gaps in critical subjects, ensuring balanced academic delivery in schools across Nakuru County.
