TSC Warns Teachers of Fake Recruitment Advert Circulating Online
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has identified a fake advert that falsely invites applications for hiring primary and junior secondary intern teachers.
The advert falsely claims that TSC aims to hire 20,000 intern teachers: 18,000 for junior secondary schools and 2,000 for primary schools to support the competency-based curriculum.
Additionally, the letter erroneously invites 26,000 senior teachers to apply for permanent and pensionable positions effective July 15.
Hiring Plans in Limbo
Despite the fake news, the government has admitted that plans to hire 46,000 junior secondary school (JSS) intern teachers are uncertain due to the withdrawn Finance Bill.
The National Treasury had proposed allocating Sh10 billion in the 2024-25 Budget to make these teachers permanent and pensionable.
Presidential Confirmation
President William Ruto announced last Wednesday that he would not be assenting to the Finance Bill, making the planned hiring uncertain.
He mentioned that the additional tax measures proposed in the Finance Bill aimed to raise money to employ the 46,000 JSS interns permanently, increase the NG-CDF by Sh10 billion, and allocate an additional Sh15 billion to county governments.
Budget Committee Warning
During a parliamentary session on June 20, Ndindi Nyoro, chair of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriation Committee, warned MPs of the consequences if the Bill failed.
He stated that MPs would need to explain to their constituents and the teachers why the Bill’s failure would result in the loss of the promised permanent positions for the 46,000 JSS interns.
Nyoro emphasized that rejecting the Bill would mean voting against confirming the interns’ permanent jobs, leaving MPs responsible for explaining this decision to their constituents.
